Welcome to the website of the
Riverlea Environment Society Inc. (RESI)

RESI is a not-for-profit environment group formed in early October 2007 by residents of the Riverlea, Hillcrest and Newell Road areas on the south-eastern edge of the city of Hamilton, New Zealand. The quiet suburban streets of the Riverlea and Berkley quadrants of Hillcrest and the country living zone of Newell Road have at their centre a well-established strip of industrial land along Riverlea Road. This strip is bounded on the eastern side by the high-quality residences of the Riverlea quadrant and on the other three by the environmentally sensitive Mangaonua Esplanade, the bush clad banks of the Waikato River and the lifestyle blocks of the Newell Road area. Nearby is the ecologically significant area of Hammond Bush, home to the rare native long-tailed bat.

Our objectives are to protect and enhance the environmental and other amenity values of the area. We engage with local government on matters of town planning and resource consent processes which we feel will impact the quality of life in the area.

Hammond Bush
Working bees are held on the last Saturday of every month, to improve the Hammond Bush area.

BlackTop
The Society's initial focus wass to prevent the granting of a resource consent by Environment Waikato to Blacktop Construction Ltd. Blacktop had applied for consent to build an asphalt plant on land bordering the Mangaonua Esplanade and close to numerous homes, businesses and workplaces. Accordingly, the society filed a submission (one of 521 submissions) in opposition to granting of the consent. On 8-Feb-08 Blacktop Construction has decided to withdraw from the Environment Waikato consent hearing process relating to a site at Riverlea Road to focus its resources on new options for its proposed asphalt plant in the region. Press Release. Riverlea Environment Society celebrates this, and thanks BlackTop for listening to the community.

District Plan

Hamilton City Council is undertaking a major review of its District Plan. This provides the Society with an opportunity to ensure changes are made to ensure that heavy industry cannot be established in the Riverlea Road industrial zone. We will have more on this subject in our forthcoming newsletter, Issue 7. Meanwhile, check out the HCC website http://fastforwardhamilton.co.nz/ and make your views heard through the Business Survey link, section 3.
